To prove it, here’s a list of reasons I love Pontiac:

1. It’s Full of Surprises

Pontiac holds some hidden gems that are often overlooked due to city stereotypes. If you’re into haunted houses, during the month of October Pontiac is home to Erebus, one of the world’s largest. There’s also exciting places like the Crofoot, a popular bar where you can hear an up and coming band with a good drink and exciting atmosphere.

2. Lots of History

A quick walk around Pontiac will quickly reveal how much history this city has to offer. I live in a neighborhood where most of the houses were built in the 1930s, making the neighborhoods almost like stepping back in time. Pontiac’s first settlers arrived in 1818 and the city was founded when Michigan gained its statehood. Cars and the Woodward Dream Cruise are also deeply imbedded in the city’s story.

3. Convenience

I’ve become spoiled by how used I am to everything being so close by! All my favorite stores are within a 5-10 minute drive, our preferred car repair shop is within walking distance, there’s a video store down the road, and we live next to major roads that make for a simple morning commute. I even walked to my dentist when I was a kid!

4. It’s Inexpensive

Pontiac, like a lot of southeastern Michigan, has seen some hard times. While it’s on the road to recovery, the home values in Pontiac are still much lower than some of the surrounding areas. This means that a lot of amazing homes can be bought for a fraction of the price in surrounding cities. Pontiac definitely isn’t perfect and there are some reasons for the lower prices, but I never would have been able to get the house I have and love in another city!

5. Diversity

I love being surrounded by people from all different backgrounds and walks of life.  In the two houses we’ve lived in while we were in Pontiac we’ve always had amazing neighbors. We’ve lived by Hispanic families who come by an offer us leftovers from their big cookouts, an older gentleman who loves working on his motorcycle and doting on our dog, and a handful of other friendly families. So far not one negative experience!

Just like anywhere, there are some frustrating things about Pontiac. There are sometimes more jaywalkers than squirrels, the tax department is error prone, and potholes are a daily peril. But there are also kids playing in the park, turkeys wandering around downtown (true story!), and a lot of people who are passionate about this city and its people. I hope you’ll stop by sometime!
